Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Community Resources Manager, the Jewish Chaplain interviews and counsels inmates on ethical and moral problems and spiritual matters; prepares and conducts religious services, administers religious rites; organizes and instructs classes in religious doctrine, Torah interpretation and Ethics; supervises the arranging of programs conducted in the institution by visiting religious volunteers; coordinates the distribution of religious literature; counsels with inmates regarding family problems; cooperates with custody/program staff in the evaluation and counsel of emotionally traumatized inmates (i.e. suicide attempts, death in family, victims of assault); supervises the work activity and maintains the time card/payroll records for the inmate chapel clerks; orders, receives, and inventories office and chapel supplies; solicits donations from community religious services and business groups; maintains required logs, prepares quarterly chapel schedules and monthly/quarterly reports; serves as a group member of or consultant to classification committees, when designated; and works with inmate groups and inmate activities. Counsels inmates on ethical and moral problems and spiritual matters; coordinates, supervises and conducts religious services. Provides individual religious counseling; organizes/instructs religious classes; visits the infirmary and segregated inmates; and supervises the work of the chapel clerk and maintains their timecards and payroll. Prepares and arranges programs conducted within the institution by visiting religious volunteers; recruits religious volunteers; and assists other staff members in carrying out the institution treatment program. Orders, maintains and distributes religious literature and supplies; and solicits donations. Maintains monthly logs and chapel schedules, and prepares monthly/quarterly reports; supervises and performs marriages. Attends In-Service Training and performs other duties as required.

    Special Requirements

    Either IOrdained rabbi, duly accredited by, and in good standing with, a recognized California rabbinical body.OR IIA lay person or a vested Cantor who has demonstrated pastoral competence as certified and endorsed by the Board of Rabbis of Northern California or the Board of Rabbis of Southern California. andJewish Chaplain 2-Experience: Two years of experience in one or a combination of the following:1. As a chaplain in the armed services, or in a public or private institution. or2. As either a rabbi or assistant rabbi of a congregation. or3. As an ordained rabbi in religious education work, as a teacher, or as a director of religious education or of young people's activities, or as a Hillel director. and Either one or a combination of the following:1. Completion of twelve months or four quarters of a full-time resident clinical pastoral training program approved by the National Conference on Clinical Pastoral Education. or2. Completion of the equivalent of two years of full-time supervised clinical or field training in pastoral care, social work, psychology, counseling and guidance, or other related fields. or3. The equivalent of one year of service as a National Jewish Welfare Board approved civilian chaplain.(Full-time graduate study, beyond studies required for ordination, if in pastoral counseling, psychology, or a related field may be substituted for a maximum of six months of the clinical pastoral training, or supervised clinical or field training, or civilian chaplain service, on the basis of one year of graduate study for three months' training or service.) and Education: Completion of theological studies for ordination as a rabbi at a recognized Jewish theological school; and equivalent to graduation from college with a minimum of 12 semester units in counseling, psychology, or a related field.

    3. Candidates new to CDCR or the Division of Juvenile Justice are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by departmental annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
